1. Introduction & Scope
This Privacy Policy applies to the website located at netspeedtests.com (the "Service", "Website", or "Platform"), operated by NetSpeedTests ("we", "us", or "our"). This policy explains how information is handled when you use our free internet speed test tool, read our educational articles, or interact with our web services.
By accessing or using NetSpeedTests, you acknowledge that you have read and understood this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with any part of this policy, please refrain from using the Website.
2. Data Handled During Speed Tests
Our speed testing tool is designed from the ground up to minimize data collection:
A. Internet Protocol (IP) Address & Geolocation
When you visit the site, your browser makes standard HTTP requests. Your public IP address is used ephemerally to route network packets and identify the geographically closest Cloudflare edge testing server. An approximate location (city/country level) and Internet Service Provider (ISP) name are displayed on your screen. We do not save, archive, or sell your IP address or geographic location to any data broker.
B. Synthetic Bandwidth Payloads
To measure download and upload speeds, your browser exchanges synthetic test payloads (consisting of arbitrary non-sensitive byte sequences) with Cloudflare edge nodes. These files contain no personal data whatsoever and are discarded from device and server buffers immediately upon measurement completion.
C. Device & Browser Headers
Standard technical metadata sent by your browser (user-agent, screen resolution, operating system family) is processed solely in client-side runtime to optimize UI rendering and ensure high-DPI canvas compatibility.
3. Browser Local Storage & Data Privacy
NetSpeedTests uses your browser's HTML5 localStorage mechanism rather than server databases to provide convenient features:
- Test History Log (
nst-history): Stores timestamps and results of your completed speed tests so you can track your connection over time. This data never leaves your device. - Theme Preference (
nst-theme): Remembers whether you prefer Light, Dark, or System visual mode.
You can delete this data at any moment by clicking "Clear History" in the History panel or by clearing your browser cache and site storage.
5. Edge Infrastructure & Cloudflare
Our network throughput benchmarking is powered by Cloudflare's speed measurement infrastructure (speed.cloudflare.com). Cloudflare operates edge facilities in 300+ cities across 100+ countries. Network packets directed to Cloudflare are governed by Cloudflare's strict privacy policy and commitment to enterprise security. For more details, refer to Cloudflare's official Privacy Policy.
6. European Privacy Rights (GDPR / UK GDPR)
If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), United Kingdom, or Switzerland, you are entitled to specific rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR):
- Right of Access: You have the right to request confirmation of whether we process your personal data and to obtain a copy.
- Right to Rectification: You have the right to correct inaccurate or incomplete data.
- Right to Erasure ("Right to be Forgotten"): You have the right to request deletion of your personal data where applicable.
- Right to Restrict or Object to Processing: You may object to the processing of your data based on legitimate interests.
- Right to Withdraw Consent: Where processing relies on your consent (such as non-essential advertising cookies), you can withdraw consent at any time.
Because NetSpeedTests does not store user accounts or personal profiles, the vast majority of user data exists strictly inside your own browser.
7. California Privacy Rights (CCPA / CPRA)
Under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), California residents have rights regarding their personal information:
- No Sale of Personal Information: We do not sell personal information as conventionally defined.
- Right to Know & Delete: You have the right to know what personal data is collected and request its deletion.
- Non-Discrimination: We will never discriminate against you, alter service pricing, or degrade speed test functionality for exercising your CCPA rights.
8. Children's Online Privacy Protection (COPPA)
NetSpeedTests is a general audience technical diagnostic utility. We do not knowingly solicit, collect, or store personal information from children under the age of 13 (or under 16 in certain jurisdictions). If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us immediately, and we will take prompt steps to remove such information.
9. Security & Encryption
All communications between your browser and NetSpeedTests are encrypted using industry-standard Transport Layer Security (TLS 1.3 / HTTPS). This protects data in transit against eavesdropping, tampering, and man-in-the-middle attacks.
10. Updates to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect operational, legal, or regulatory requirements. Any modifications will be posted directly to this page with an updated "Last Updated" date. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
